Democratic cries to 'defund police' fade in U.S. mayoral races as crime surges:

Democratic Candidates from Atlanta to Minneapolis are avoiding the topic of “defund the police” as they continue calling for reform. Some representatives, including all of the mayoral candidates in Atlanta’s race, are now even vowing to hire more police officers. This is an attempt to appeal to moderate voters as violent crime overall goes up for the first time in four years and murder-rates rise 30% in 2020, according to FBI reports. Polls show that there is an increase in Americans who want to see more police funding with a similar decrease in those opposed, with black voters being especially opposed to cuts in police funding.
Gun not thoroughly checked before Alec Baldwin fired fatal shot:

Last week actor Alec Baldwin fired a live shot on the set of the movie Rust in an accidental fatal shooting. A news conference by Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza and District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies on Wednesday has since brought new details to light. Assistant Director Dave Halls, who was fired from another set in 2019 over a gun mishap, reportedly handed the gun to Baldwin after telling him it was safe. While legal charges have yet to be filed it is still a possibility. Authorities have collected three firearms, 500 rounds of ammunition, and clothing from the set. The shooting has led to widespread debate over safety measures on film sets and the potential banning of certain guns as props.
