Greek Customs: Spitting for good Luck

There are many traditions in Greece which encourage spitting. This spitting gesture is always done three times so as to represent the Holy Trinity. It is typically more symbolic with people often saying “ftou ftou ftou” rather than actually spitting on someone. Greek people spit at people for a number of reasons. Most typically, they do this to ward off the evil eye, a curse Greeks believe can be given by glaring at someone or complimenting them. It is typical for fishermen to spit on their nets to keep the evil eye at a distance and bring in a better catch. Spitting is also used as a way to avoid misfortune and wish somebody good luck. This has led it to be common for guests to spit on Brides during their wedding, on babies during their baptism, and on people on other special occasions throughout their lives.
